COLOUR FACTS
YELLOWMAKES
YOU HUNGRY:
The colour yellow is known to stimulate appetite
and therefore makes you eat more. It is known to
trigger hunger. Another colour that stimulates
hunger is the colour orange. It would not be wise
to paint your kitchen or dining area in the colours
yellow or orange because this would encourage
over eating. In a lot of countries taxis are painted
yellow. This trend was started by John D. Hertz- a
taxi entrepreneur in Chicago based on a study
by University of Chicago that stated yellow is the
colour most easily seen at a distance.
In the religious circles, yellow is perceiveddifferently
by different religions. To Hindus, yellow is a sacred
colour, it’s a symbol of happiness and is second only
to white.
In the Roman Catholic Church, yellow symbolizes
gold and the golden key to the Kingdom of Heaven,
which Christ gave to Saint peter.
In Japan, yellow can represent courage and light. It
is worn on the anniversary of a funeral. It can also
imply joy, happiness, optimism and many other
meanings common in the West.
COLOURS CAN
FRIGHTEN PEOPLE:
There are known cases of people who have a fear of
colour. This fear is called Chromophobia. It is a rare
condition that is a persistent and irrational fear of
colour. Some people react to certain tones of specific
colours while others have an overall reaction to
colour and try to avoid it. The signs and symptoms
are: nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, feeling
of panic, elevated heart rate and blood pressure,
anxiety, light headedness, headache, and trembling.
Effective treatment involves methods and techniques
that include systematic desensitization and exposure
therapy.
If you think you are partially chromophobic, try lighter
hues that may not necessarily scream ‘colour’ or try
monochromatic looks.
