Choose a Technique
There are three techniques to styling a colour-blocked outfit,
select one.
COLOUR BLOCK LIKE A PRO
Colour-blocking is when a garment or outfit is composed of finite blocks of colour.
It is a trend that has been here since the 80s. Our mothers rocked the look, we rock it and our daughters
might still rock it. It is not the easiest trend to pull off successfully, so we will share with you five
simple steps to make you feel super confident about your choices.
Separates:
Mix garments of
contrasting (2 - 4)
colours.
Stand-alone:
One colour - blocked
garment or accessory
where the designer
has already done all
the work for you.
Choosing Colours
Complementary colours are opposite each other on a basic
colour wheel. This colour combining method works well if you
want to make something stand out. Note, these colour combos
can be jarring to the eye.
Analogous colour schemes use colours that are next to each
other on the colour wheel. This colour combo approach is more
harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
Select an initial favoured colour in a hue that is flattering on you
and thenwork from there to complete your outfit. Colour-blocking
does not mean your colour selection must be bright – subdued
hues work beautifully too. Combine a maximum of four colours in
one outfit – two to three work best.
Complete your look with Neutrals
Without a doubt, colour-blocking is a bold and funway to dress! The
secret is tomake sure the focus remains on you and not solely the
style technique. You want to wear the trend and not let the trend
wear you.
Complete your look with neutrals – neutral colours (grey, brown,
black, camel, white, navy, etc), neutral designs and/or neutral
accessories, as necessary. These neutral pieces can be gorgeous,
yet they need to be visually uneventful in relation to the rest of your
outfit tobest support your chosencolour-blocking style technique.
Most people think that colour-blocking cannot be incorporated
into their daily office outfits; however, this is far from the truth.
If you work in a creative field or in an office, then it is much easier
to experiment with various colour combos or architectural
colour-blocked patterns. Maybe you just haven’t been able to find
satisfying results for colour-blocked weekend wear. Whatever
the reason may be, do not give up, there is a solution…try colour-
blocked accessories. Colour-blocked (aka. bi-tonal or multi-tonal)
handbags, shoes, scarves, jewellery and other accessories are a
huge hit in themarketplace. No need to admire fromafar, now there
is no reason why one should not participate in the colour-blocking
trend!
Monochromatic:
One colour throughout
the entire outfit in
different hues.
