Hosts of the Amateur Matchplay Golf Championships, Royal Nairobi
Golf Club held a prize giving ceremony for the winners of this year’s
competition. Kenya Golf Union received a sponsorship of Ksh250, 000
from Crown Paints earlier in the year.
Winners of the Junior Golf competition participated in 19 competitions
held during the year; with the championship finals held on the 17th
and 18th of December. Sixteen year old Naomi Wafula emerged as the
overall gross winner with a stroke average of 73.40 and an impressive
handicap at three. The youngest award was received by ten year old
Njoroge Kibugu with gross score at 282 and a stroke average of 98.20.
Receivers of this year’s Kenya Golf Union Golfer of the Year (GOTY)
competition Top Player of the Year awards were eighteen year
old Daniel Nduva who garnered an impressive 71.20 points with a
remarkable handicap of two alongside this year’s star of Junior Golf
Foundation Naomi Wafula. The winners have clinched the opportunity
to play at the Kenya Golf Open taking place in 2014, to be hosted by
Karen Country Club.
Players of ages 12-18 took part in 19 competitions held
throughout the year and received awards within their respective
age divisions A-D. “Crown Paints is proud to be associated with
nurturing young golfer’s talent as well as for sponsorship such
as these to continue developing the sport in the country,” said
John Hadley Group Marketing Officer at Crown Paints.
During the awards ceremony chairman of the Junior Golf
Foundation Ashwin Gidoomal expressed the Kenya Golf Union’s
dedication to the sport and its aims at putting together a
formidable team working alongside the Ministry of Youth Affairs,
Sports and others in preparation of the upcoming Olympics.
The game of golf amongst the youth is growing as a result of
the country’s continuous efforts to promote the sport, “Kenya
will be represented by two juniors at the 2nd youth Olympic
games to be held in China,” said Gidoomal. Crown Paints has
sponsored several tournaments in the Kenya golfing circuit
in recent years. The firm recently held the culmination of its
Teflon Greensome Challenge at the Limuru Country Club, which
featured golf tournaments held at various clubs countrywide.
Winners of the challenge received an all-expenses paid trip to
a golf resort located in Johannesburg, South Africa for four
nights. The package also included two complimentary rounds of
golf at the resort.
