MEN AND COLOUR
Article by Phil Mwembi
Men anD colour,
blame it on science
If a man walks into a paint store with a member of the opposite sex to choose his preferred color to paint a
house, an office or even a room, chances are that these two people may not agree on a single shade.
As one may guess, pink isn’t a much preferred hue for most men. Blue, green, and black
are generally the colors that most men appreciate. Women too love these but for
different reasons. For example they associate blue with reliability and dependability.
These are the same qualities that women will look for in a man, and hence may love
the colour for this reason.
However, it is interesting to note that the colours men fancy and those they find
attractive on women aren’t necessarily the same. It is a widely known fact that
most men have difficulties in differentiating colours and neuroscientists have
confirmed these facts as well. Women are better at distinguishing among subtle
colours as compared to men.
Scientists have for a long time upheld the fact that both sexes see colors
differently. However, a lot of their evidence does not hold water, for instance,
linguistic researchers show that women possess a larger vocabulary than men
when describing colors but there is no statistical research to support this theory.
But then again women speak 13,000 more words than the average man, ask the guy
trying to explain to his woman where he was last night.
When researchers tested color vision for both sexes by projecting colors onto frosted glass,
women proved slightly better at discriminating among subtle gradations in the middle of a
color spectrum, where yellow and green reside. Women detected tiny distinctions between
yellows that looked identical to men. Researchers also discovered that men require a slightly longer wavelength to see the same hue
as women; an object that women experience as orange will look slightly more yellowish to men.
These theories authenticate the fact that men are generally poor with colors. They perceive colours differently in comparison to
women. So next time don’t ask us whether that dress you’re wearing is more of turquoise or blue because to us it all looks like green!
However, Crown Paints has come to our rescue by introducing Crown Colour App. The App, first of its kind in the market helps in
making a more informed and accurate selection of preferred home interior colour scheme. It is available on both, the Google Play
Store and the Apple Store.
Men no longer have to hear comments such as “I asked you to buy the purple one, not the violet one.” We can confidently comment on
the colour of your shoes without giving it a second thought. Heck we can even tell the difference between fuchsia and pink!
