So you are planning a paint makeover but you haven’t the slightest idea where to start off from? Here are 6 simple steps to guide you.
- Plan early – Many people make the mistake of not planning for their house’s paint job. You should be in a position to start choosing the color scheme and know how other housing accessories like chandeliers, curtains, furniture etc. will complement the new setting.
- Clear everything – It is advisable to clear everything from the house before you start painting. If you are not in a position to, always gather everything in the middle of the rooms and cover them with a drop cloth. Make sure you wrap the cloth all around and spread a wide polythene/plastic cover above.
- Take out all hardware – It may seem easier to paint above the door hinges, knobs, and handles, but unless you are a professional painter, this could end up looking like a very poor paint job in the end. Always remove all of the items and mark them (top right cabinet hinge, living room door knob) before keeping them in a box. This provides you with an opportunity to wash them before fixing them back.
- Be ready – Be armored for the fight because no matter how hard you try, there will always be paint drops on the floor and on your garments. Make sure you wear old clothes, plastic gloves, shower caps and tight slippers. Tracking the paint to other rooms and areas should be the least of your problems.
- Don’t paint over bad walls – Fix any crack on your walls before you start. Competent paint companies are always staffed with professionals that would help apply textures and fill the cracks.
Once you have followed these simple steps, you are armed and ready to go. Remember to be ready to do small touch ups and do not be frustrated to be forced to repaint specific areas. Switch between your brush and your paint rollers to give you a smooth and clean finish.
