Things to Consider When Choosing Wall Colour

Painting the walls of your home or office is a crucial part of interior decor. As such, a lot of time and thinking should be put into consideration. Choosing the wrong colour could result in your incurring too many unnecessary costs when having to do a repaint.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before settling on a colour choice.

Size: The size of the room is very important. Smaller spaces need bright colours as they will make it appear larger and more spacious and properly air conditioned. If you have a large room, it’s better to go for darker colours. They make the room seem more compact and smaller. Look at the space you are working with and plan accordingly. Don’t use dark colours in a small room as it will seem more cramped and become uncomfortable.
Function: A room’s function is also important. Will it be an office, the kitchen, or dining room/Function of space? Knowing this will help you choose the right colours. Bedrooms and living rooms tend to need cool and bright colours that will help you relax. The office needs you to be attentive and should therefore have shades that will motivate you to walk. For such orange is a great choice. Once you know what you will need the room for, you can then go out and buy your preferred colour choices.

Lighting: The lighting of the room is also something you need to consider. Is the lighting natural or artificial? If there is adequate natural lighting in the room then you will need colours that will not cause reflections. If you do not have adequate natural light, then go for light colours that will reflect and light up more of the room. Deep colours are also appropriate for well lit areas and should be utilised.

Existing Colours: Also look at the current existing colours in the room; what colours are on the furniture, curtains and carpets? This will help you determine the perfect colour to paint your walls. Go for colours that will blend in well with what is already there. DO not put yourself in a position where you might have to get new upholstery, carpets and curtains simply because you painted your walls.

Type and colour of floor surfacing: Flooring is also an important aspect to keep in mind. Dark wooden floors require you to use neutral or warm colours. When you have light floors, you are free to play around with more colour options and can contrast the paint choices.

Ambient: The feeling and mood you want to create is also something to consider. If you are looking to go for a cozy feeling, then warm colours are what you should invest in. Light beiges should be reserved for a bright airy atmosphere. Avoid dark shades as they will bring a sombre mood to a room which is not suitable for a home or office.

These are just but a few things to consider when choosing wall paints. Let your personal needs and taste also factor into the decision. Have some fun while at it and your walls will end up looking good. Try out different shades first and consult an expert before you decide on anything.

I recently painted my clay tile floors with brick red paint and then applied sanding sealer on top. Some areas turned white though. How can I remedy this? What should I do?
