Colourful DIY Projects

Sometimes you look at a room in your house and feel it’s a little too dull. Maybe it’s not the whole room, it could just be that one spot that looks and feels out of place. All it needs is a little colour and it will pop out the way you want. You don’t have to spend money to get this effect. You can start a DIY project over the weekend.

DIY projects are when you embark on fixing or changing things in your home without professional help. One good thing about such projects is they give you something to do and also help you and your family decide for yourself how you want things to be. It also gives you time to bond as a family.

If your bedroom or living room needs a little colour, a throw pillow is one project to embark on. You can sew up a case for your throw pillows to make them seem less dull. You don’t have to be a professional, you just need to have enough skills to sew together colourful fabrics. Make the throw pillow create a colour block effect so that it lights up the room.

You could also use patchwork for the living room and bedroom. Sew up some fancy patches and reupholster your sofa. Or add the patches to a white duvet or sheet to add character to your bedding.

It’s also possible to try out some DIY projects in your kitchen. In this case all you will need is some colourful paints. Select random spots on your kitchen cabinets and paint them. You could choose to paint the whole door or simply a section of it. Go for bold colours that will make a statement. For instant, if your cabinet has double doors, paint one in a light blue colour and the other in red.

You can also try a project involving your utensils to brighten up the kitchen. Select a few spoons, forks and knives and some paint. Paint the utensils in a fancy colour that appeals to you and let them dry. Select some clear containers and place them strategically around the kitchen. Take the painted utensils and display them in these containers. This should be an easy and cheap way to get decorative material in your kitchen. It will also give you a fun activity to keep you busy during the weekend.

You can also do a project involving your furniture pieces. Maybe it’s an old stool, a desk or chair. Whatever furniture you choose can benefit from some TLC over the weekend. What you need is to select a bright colour for the furniture. Sand down the wood, fix any broken legs or handles and varnish the wood. Once this is done, you can paint the furniture and let it dry. You can then place the newly painted furniture in a spot that was dull and needed some colour.

DIY colourful projects mostly involve you painting. Painting is a great way to relax and such projects would be good to try out every few months. It will give you a chance to redo your home in small ways while having fun at it. The next time your whole family is home for the weekend, bring out the old clothes, paint and have yourself a good time adding colour to your home.
