Most times when you are designing your home, you tend to forget the kitchen till the last moment. It’s not because it isn’t an important room in the house but because you find it hard settling on ideas. Decorating a kitchen is never easy but if it is done right, you can start to think of the kitchen as the heart of your home.

You should focus on functionality as well as aesthetic value of the kitchen. Meal preparation is the main function of the kitchen and you should ensure that you have the appliances that you need to make your work easier. You have to create enough space to move around freely and allow light into the kitchen. With these ideas in mind, decorating your kitchen will become easier.

To begin with, forget large appliances and begin to scale down on size.  This may mean getting a small microwave, a stove with 2 burners as opposed to 4, as well as a single sink.  Additionally, instead of closed cabinets, work with shelves which will give the kitchen a feeling of being open and therefore larger.  As a means of making an otherwise small modern kitchen look bigger, use glass on cabinet doors to enhance the feeling of having space.  Use light to expand the room as well.  Natural light during the day is excellent.  However, at night combine fluorescent lighting with incandescent lighting to make the room bright and open.

The first thing you need to consider is the décor theme. What idea do you want the kitchen to carry? Go for something unique that will reflect your personal taste. You could choose to go with a décor theme based on your personality. You could also choose to go for a theme that reflects time; maybe a modern day depiction or a 1940s theme. It’s all about being comfortable with the theme you choose.

Colour is also an important part of decorating your kitchen. You can choose to go for one colour throughout or use 2 colours. Whatever colour you choose should be bold yet calm at the same time. Screaming colours will be too distracting. Blend the paints with each other to create a great effect that will bring out the décor theme more clearly.

Once you are done with the décor theme and colour, you need to consider your storage options. Do you want to have high cabinets or low cabinets? All this will affect the room’s décor. Choose to go for a little of both. Have a few cabinets with shelves to store your utensils high up on the wall as well as low cabinets placed strategically round your kitchen.  Whatever cabinets you choose should have unique handles that will add a decorative look to the kitchen. Make them shiny and paint the cabinets with some unique patterns.

Always remember to accessorize your kitchen. Choose a few décor balls or fruit baskets to place on your kitchen islands. Also get curtains and blonds as well as holders for you dish towels to accessorize the room. Place them round the kitchen in a unique and decorative way. You can also use your utensils to accessorize. Hang up some of them from the ceiling and let their shiny look decorate the room.
