Decorating a boy child’s room

shutterstock_58603525There comes a time when you get your child their own room. There are old enough to sleep on their own and they need that one place to call their own. The problem comes in deciding how to decorate this room. Boys are very particular about what they want so this can be a hard task sometimes.

When decorating a boy’s room, the first thing you need to consider is the decor theme you want to go for. Since it is their room, ask for their input. They might be young, but they know what they like and want. Go for something that will reflect their hobbies and dreams. Boys are generally adventurous, get a theme that reflects this. Get a room that focuses on their favorite TV shows or activity. If they love detective shows, get something that reflects that.

Once you have the theme picked out, go for the color. Boys don’t like colours that are too feminine, so avoid these. Go for something bold that will be perfect even after years since you don’t want to keep painting the room every year. Think of calm colours that will help them relax and sleep well. Your son might like more than one color and want the room to have all of them. Limit these colours to prevent the room from having a circus theme.  Blue and green are generally the best colours to use for boys so go for those and see how he likes them.

Boys might not want to confess this, but they also like having accessories and décor pieces around them. Since it is a boys, room avoid anything they might consider girly. If it has to be a stuffed animal, let it be one of an animal they like. Pick pictures of their favorite actors or super heroes to hang around the room. You can use their favorite toys placed in specific ways around the room to accessorize it. Get a few posters that blend in well with the décor theme and hang them.

Bedding is also an important aspect of styling a boy’s room. Pick a bed that they will like. Young boys love car shaped beds, so go for those and change it as they grow older. Get duvets, sheet and blankets that will match the colours and décor theme of the room. Get something with designs and patterns that reflect their hobbies. If he is into army related activities, why not get him camouflage bedding? You could also get one with images of his favorite cartoon characters. As he grows older, change the bedding to suit his new tastes and hobbies.

The one thing you need to remember is to include your son in decorating his room. Get his input and ideas and it should all work out once you incorporate them with yours. It’s not an easy task to decorate his room, but it should be fun if you put your mind to it.
