Most of us start a typical day at the bathroom; others visit it at least one more time before retiring to bed at night.  Depending on how you look at your bathroom, it may be a place where you get your mandatory daily wash or it could be a sanctuary for relaxation.

For me, it’s the former in the morning and the later in the evening. Purely as a washroom, there is little in the way of décor required in the bathroom. However if you desire to relax in a warm, aromatic, therapeutic bath, then decorating your bathroom right will go a long way in enabling and enhacing this experience.

Granted, any bathroom needs basic fixtures to enable it effectively perform its primary function. Hence, even before you embark on decorating your bathroom, you need to ensure that you have a few things in place. Usually, even these may vary depending on the size and orientation of your space. Needless to say, your bath tab or shower has to be in place. In addittion, some storage and fixture for towels, bath robes, and toletries certainly make life a lot easier.

With the basics taken care of, some décor elements are necessary to transform your bathroom into a trully relaxing space. Let us look at a few of these:

  • Colour Scheme: Just like with any other room in the house, it is instructive to come up with a colour scheme for your bathroom. Relaxation being a core motivation, it is advisable to consider cool colours like light hues of blue. Some people like to extend the colour of the master bedroom to its bathroom. While this decision sounds logical, it doesn’t always achieve the desired relaxation effect since some bedroom décor draw from different themes. As a general rule, go for the light colours as they enhance a sense of peace.

  • Wall Tiles: Naturally, a significant portion of your bathroom walls will be tiled for ease of cleaning. When choosing your tiles, remain true to you colour scheme. If your bathroom is mainly white or off-white, you may want to consider using a few coloured tiles to create strips of colour on some walls. This will help brake the monotony. You can also add some flavour to the wall tiles by fixing stickers on them. The choice on what stickers will add to the mood is really yours.

  • Lighting: When it comes to the bathroom lighting, moderation works best. Neither too little nor too much lighting is required. Double glazed translucent glass windows will let in just the right amount of light without compromising privacy. Your bathroom lamps should be protected and palced well away from the water source. To add an aura of repose, use scented candles or some strategically placed coloured lamp.

  • Fixtures: permanent fixture like the bath tab, towel rails and toiletry racks can also serve a decorative purpose over and a bove their functional intentions. Choose a tab colour that is in keeping with your overall bathroom colour scheme. Your soaps, cleansers, shampoos and shower gels are likely to come in different colours. Arrange them in a way that adds to the room’s visual appeal.

Other items in your bathroom like a shower curtain, a mirror and floor rug can also be creatively chosen to contribute to your décor objective. Be deliberate in what you choose and where/how you place them.
