Science teaches that you see an object when light bounces of that object and lands on your eyes. Simply put; without light there is no seeing! Yet sometimes we want to see things differently. We want to create a sense of drama and depth in what we see. What do we need? You guessed it right: LIGHT!
Savvy interior decorators employ light as an ally in delighting the eye and creating a variety of moods. Before we explore some ways of utilising light in interior décor, let’s outline some basic aspects of interior lighting
Lighting Categories
i. General (ambient lighting): As the primary source of illumination, ambient lighting is used to replace sunlight. It radiates a level of brightness that allows you to see without straining, provides light so you can see or walk around the home, and is the light source that you use on a frequent basis.
ii. Task Lighting: This provides a small area of light for specific tasks. Task lighting helps prevent eye strain, and is often seen above desks and other workstations, or entertainment areas such as pool and card tables.
iii. Accent (feature) Lighting: This lighting instantly creates visual interest to any space. It is often used to illuminate sculptures and other landscaping. Accent lighting in home interiors is popularly used to spotlight paintings, alcoves, bookcases, or other prized possessions.
Lighting Fixtures
- Chandeliers can be used as general lighting or, task lighting if designed with a downlight.
- Ceiling mounted fixtures create a safe passageway into other rooms of the house and can be installed flush to the ceiling, or with a slight chain drop down. These fixtures can be used as general lighting, or task lighting when controlled with a dimmer.
- Wall mounted light fixtures are commonly seen in the bedroom. They can be used as general lighting or task lighting when reading in bed.
- Track lighting is a versatile lighting source as it can swivel, change direction, or be used as a spotlight to a specific area. It can be used as general lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.
- Recessed lighting is hidden out of sight, as the fixtures are installed in the ceiling. They can be used in any room of the house, regardless of ceiling height or room size. Recessed lighting is versatile, as it can be used for general lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting.
- Portable lamps can be moved effortlessly, and provide a flexible light source. These are used as general lighting, task lighting, or even accent lighting, and are available in many forms and shapes to fit any décor. Table lamps, floor lamps, and desk lamps are some of the most popular portable lamps available.
Light Décor Tips
By focusing on atmosphere, color and position, you can turn natural and artificial light into interior decorating tools. Each element of light then becomes an integral part of your interior décor. Here are some tips on how to achieve some décor effects using light:
Light Positioning
- Regulate the amount of natural light you permit to flow in through your windows or doors.
- Use blinds and curtains to mellow out strong light points.
- Create focal points by positioning light fixtures at key places in each room.
- Choose one strong point for each room, and then supplement it with milder points all around.
Light Architecture
- Use pools of light to divide large rooms into visually smaller areas.
- Evenly illuminate small rooms to make them seem larger.
Light Hues
- For atmosphere and beauty, use amber light bulbs as they will glaze over flaws and dirt, while granting a room a welcoming aura.
- Supplement the room’s illumination with small light fixtures with white shades or neon bulbs that are turned on when strong light is needed.
- Use low voltage bulbs which can allow you to economically keep the decorative light fixtures on at all times and hence create pools of light in the room’s decor.
Mood Setting Light
- Employ Candle light to set mood
- Only use candle illumination to supplement your interior decorating light.
