The inclusion of art items eg paintings, murals, mosaics, tapestry etc as ingredients in home décor is probably as old as the practice of home décor itself. Strictly speaking, décor is a form of art. However not all décor utilizes items of art as the foundation of the decorating project. In recent times, the availability of a varity of art forms has boosted the role of art in home décor. Further, the internet has created a new channel for sharing and trading visual arts.
Few would pass up the opportunity to place a piece of painting on one wall or another in their houses. Yet if one is to realize the transforming power of art in home décor, a more deliberate approach is required. Let’s now look at some of the ways of doing it right.
Choosing Art for Your Home
Just like with any item of décor, art that is intended to adorn your wall has to be carefully chosen. A lot will depend on individual tastes but careful consideration has to be given to your style and already existing furnishing in your nairobi home. The art chosen has to be in harmony with both your style and colours. While African art and mosaics can be found cheaply and readily, they would form a horrendous mismatch if generously used in a contemporary styled room. In this particular case, abstract art may be a better match. In addition to colour and style you also need to think:
- Form: the options range from paintings (oil or water), tapestry, beadwork, mosaics, murals, to collage
- Size: a huge piece on a wall draws attention hence assuming the role of a focal point. A small piece or a collection of small pieces on the other hand may remain inconspicous but can accentuate a style
No-matter your taste, finding art at a reasonable price is now easier than ever. The variety available at the various Masai markets in Nairobi should suffice for most tastes.
Display like a Pro
Well chosen art has to be equally well displayed. In décor, poor display of art is considered a cardinal sin. Besides, an uninspiring display would beat the whole purpose of investing in your choice pieces. When displaying art you have to consider:
- Height: the centrepoint of a piece should be at the eye level of an average adult.
- Surrounding: relate the art size to the wall and the furniture around it
- Orientation: a portrait display enhances the feel of height while a landscape enhances the feel of width. Decide which is required
- Light: pieces dispalyed on walls in dark corridors or rooms may need to be illuminated witha lamp
- Anchor: use hooks/ fastener that will support the full wait of the piece of art. Wall shelves and mantel piece also provide exquisite alternatives to hooks.
Tradition and best décor practice aside, experimenting with the form and display of art can yield very fascinating results. If you are eclectic and well travelled I would recommend that you experiment with the pieces you may have collected along the way. As for me, I am looking forward to creating something special from my four year old’s school doodle.
