Crown Paints won in a number of categories at the COYA Awards this year including the prestigious Company of The Year 2016 Award which it won for the second time having won it last in 2014. This award recognizes excellence in management, operations and business performance. Organised by the Kenya Institute of Management, the COYA Awards have become an important benchmark for organizations in Kenya.
Crown Paints was awarded for “facilitating an environment that encourages innovative practices for new idea generation, having governance structures that recognise the need for transparent accountability for the conduct of affairs, use of resources and results of the activities, ensuring implementation of strategies that encourage continual improvement, promoting a culture of excellence and sustainable longevity.” The citation further said “Crown Paints has been consistent in the OPI (Organisational Performance Index) journey and religiously implemented the OPI recommendations over the LAST 5 years resulting in bottom-line growth. There is clear evidence of business transformation and expansion in East Africa with a committed work force always aiming higher.”

This Award was won by Nicholas Wanambisi, Human Resources Manager at Crown Paints for the excellence of his work in achieving a culture transformation at Crown Paints through employee engagement and involvement. The Award also recognizes his commitment to the Organizational Performance Index (OPI) and his exemplary managerial skills.
2016 Winner – Leadership & Management Category
Crown Paints won in this category for excellence in leadership and management. As stated in the citation, “The company has a well-formulated brand promise cascaded and internalized among employees. Key growth trends are evident in the corporate business strategy. A proper governance structure is in place and evidence of mentorship program, knowledge sharing in meetings and innovation reflected through policy documentation and customer participation in the realization of the results.”
2016 Winner – Customer Orientation and Marketing Category
Crown Paints was awarded in this category for its aggressive brand communication strategy leading to high product visibility and steady growth of sales. The citation further said, “All departments are customer driven with evidence of productivity improvement programs to ensure product and service quality is right. The company has built a special relationship with their customers and has created effective structures for gathering marketing intelligence to inform their product offers.”
2016 Winner – Innovation, ICT and Knowledge Management Category
This award recognizes Crown Paints’ use of technology and innovation in product development and business practices. “The organization has clear policies and structures for each of the major factors in this determinant. They have developed metrics for measuring innovation by assessing business units through Balanced Scorecard innovation Key Performance Indicators. They have constantly engaged customers when developing new products for the market,” the citation stated.
